The Esoteric Meaning of the Panchakshari Mantra

Found in the eighth hymn of the fourth kanda of the Shri Rudram Chamakam in the Krishna Yajurveda, Om Namah Shivaya is the foremost mantra of Shaivism.

The five syllables (पञ्चाक्षर) represent the five cosmic elements (Pancha Maha Bhutas) and the five sacred actions of divinity:

  • Na (न): Earth element (Prithvi) and grace.
  • Ma (म): Water element (Apas) and preservation.
  • Shi (शि): Fire element (Agni) and illumination.
  • Va (वा): Air element (Vayu) and vital breath.
  • Ya (य): Ether / Space element (Akasha) and pure awareness.
