The Rigvedic Majesty of the Gayatri Mantra
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
Oṃ Bhūr Bhuvaḥ Svaḥ | Tat Savitur Vareṇyaṃ | Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi | Dhiyo Yo Naḥ Pracodayāt ||
"We meditate on that most adorable, effulgent solar splendor of the divine creator Savitur. May that Supreme Light illuminate and guide our intellect and inner vision."
Heralded in the Rigveda (Mandala 3, Sukta 62) and revered as Veda Mata (the Mother of the Vedas), the Gayatri Mantra is an invocation of cosmic illumination. Its 24 syllables correspond to 24 divine energies that awaken intuitive wisdom (Dhi).
Traditional Sandhyavandanam Practice
In classical Vedic discipline, Gayatri Japa is traditionally performed during the three sandhyas (junctions of the day):
- Pratah Sandhya (Morning): Facing east before sunrise.
- Madhyahna Sandhya (Noon): Facing the midday sun.
- Sayam Sandhya (Evening): Facing west at sunset.
Practitioners traditionally chant 108, 54, or 28 repetitions during each sandhya sitting.
